Old Bridge, NJ – Sept. 25, 2017 – The Old Bridge Public Library will host a range of cultural events in October, with live performances of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Celtic music, and readings of Edgar Allan Poe’s the Raven and Algernon Blackwood’s The Wendigo. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation for the Old Bridge Food Pantry to these free events.
On Sun. Oct. 8th at 2pm, the respected Hudson Shakespeare Company returns to the Library to present Macbeth, Shakespeare’s eerie tale about the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. The play tells the story of the brave Scottish General Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. Forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death. The Hudson Shakespeare Company is a regional theatrical touring company based in Jersey City, NJ, that produces an annual summer Shakespeare in the Park festival and offers a variety of theatrical productions and educational programs in libraries, parks, schools and other venues throughout the state.
Next, on Sat. Oct. 14th at 2:30pm, the Library will welcome members of Matawan’s Spotlight Players for A Celtic Experience, an afternoon of traditional and contemporary songs from the Celtic Nations. As part of the Library’s Second Saturday event series, they’ll be celebrating all things Celtic, from bagpipes and fiddles to lads, lassies, kilts and jigs.
Rounding out the cultural events, on Sun., Oct. 29th, at 2pm the Garden State Speculative Fiction Writers (GSSFW) present Something’s Out There: A Reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven and Algernon Blackwood’s The Wendigo. Who is rapping at the chamber door? What rides the wind that buffets a lonely tent in a vast wilderness? Unseen terrors will make their presence known during these readings. A shadowy, simulated campfire setting will enhance the listening experience as the GSSFW give eerie voice to these classics of fear and suspense.
The Old Bridge Public Library was recently voted one of the three Best Public Libraries in Middlesex County by the readers of the Home News Tribune.
