The Library is very excited to present a special reenactment of the famous “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast this Saturday, Oct.17th at 2:30pm. In honor of the 77th anniversary of the program, the Garden State Speculative Fiction Writers Group (GSSW) will perform using the original radio script, incorporating live sound effects and wearing period costuming. The original “War of the Worlds” was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air, and was performed on Oct. 30th, 1938. Narrated and directed by Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel, and became famous for allegedly causing mass panic, although the extent of this mass panic is uncertain, as the program had relatively few listeners. Come join us for a taste of the excitement and fear experienced by listeners long ago.
